Exploring Samoa is a breeze with a range of transport options to suit every type of traveller. Whether you’re planning to hop between islands, navigate the streets of Apia, or venture off the beaten path, getting around in Samoa is simple, affordable, and offers stunning views along the way.
1. Car Rentals
Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways to see Samoa at your own pace. With well-maintained roads and easy navigation, driving gives you the freedom to explore hidden beaches, local villages, and popular attractions. Rental cars are available at the airport and in Apia, with options ranging from compact cars to larger vehicles for families. Remember that driving is on the left side of the road, and you’ll need to obtain a temporary local driver’s license, which your rental agency can help arrange.
2. Public buses
For a truly authentic Samoan experience, hop on one of the colorful public buses. These buses are a budget-friendly option and offer a chance to mingle with locals while enjoying scenic routes. Buses don’t follow a strict schedule, so be prepared to go with the flow, and just wave one down from the roadside. They operate mainly on the islands of Upolu and Savai’i, connecting key towns and villages. Keep in mind that these buses often don’t have designated stops, and the ride is part of the adventure!
3. Taxis and Private Transfers
Taxis are readily available in Apia and other major areas, offering an affordable and easy way to get around. If you’re travelling in a group or have lots of luggage, consider booking a private transfer. Hotels and tour operators can arrange transfers to and from the airport, ferry terminals, and popular destinations, ensuring a stress-free journey.
4. Scooter Rentals
Scooters can be a fun and budget-friendly way to get around, especially if you’re traveling solo or as a pair. They’re great for zipping through towns and finding those hidden beach spots. That said, we don’t usually recommend them because of the many stray dogs around—some of them can be aggressive and might even try to bite the tires, which can make for a tricky situation. Plus, some roads have a few potholes to watch out for. If you do decide to give it a go, just be sure to wear a helmet, take it slow, and keep an eye on the road!
5. Ferry Services Between Islands
To travel between the main islands of Upolu and Savai’i, take the inter-island ferry, which operates multiple times a day. The ferry ride takes about 1-1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of the ocean, with options to take your car onboard if you’re renting. It’s a good idea to arrive early, especially during peak times, to secure your spot.
